Your prices

True cost per item–materials + labour + packaging + overhead
Wholesale price–to shops and stockists
Retail price–what you list it at
You take home per sale–after fees
Profit per hour of work–on top of your wage

How the formula works

  1. Labour = hours × your hourly wage. Paying yourself is a cost, not profit.
  2. Overhead = a % of (materials + labour + packaging), or a flat amount per item.
  3. True cost = materials + labour + packaging + overhead.
  4. Wholesale = true cost ÷ (1 − margin). A 30% margin means 30% of the wholesale price is profit: cost ÷ 0.70.
  5. Retail = wholesale × your multiplier (2× by default), so a shop can buy at wholesale and still make money.
  6. Take home = retail − platform fees. Etsy: listing fee + transaction % and processing % of (price + shipping) + the fixed processing fee. Craft fair: card % of the price + fixed card fee.
  7. Profit per hour = (take home − true cost) ÷ hours. Your wage is already paid inside the true cost, so this is extra.

The lowest retail price that keeps your margin is the price where take-home after fees still equals your wholesale price. Never discount below it.
